Take Part

RDA offers fun and uplifting equestrian experiences to children and adults of all abilities. Groups offer opportunities based on their facilities and available horsepower.

Our participants include those with autism, physical, sensory and learning disabilities as well as those who come to improve their mental health.

Our coaches are trained and qualified to deliver a positive experience whether that is a therapeutic carriage drive or competitive ride. Our therapists are the ponies helped by our volunteers who can provide extra support for those who need it.

Riding and carriage driving are great for muscle strength, balance, fitness and increased independence. Some groups also offer ground based sessions which boost confidence and mood and give the chance of interaction with a pony.

If you would like to join us please contact your local group or County Chair but please realise that many groups have waiting lists at the moment.

Riding

The therapeutic movement of the horse helps a rider develop their core strength and balance.  Individual goals are set as participants have the opportunity to progress their riding skills. Some might move from the lead rein to riding on their own, for others progression might be overcoming their anxieties to join in. The sense of achievement is the same. Group and individual sessions are offered.

Carriage Driving

The movement of the carriage, connection with the horse and achievement of learning a new skill also benefit our drivers. When a disabled person cannot ride or be matched with a suitable riding horse carriage driving is often still accessible.

On the ground

Horsecare sessions allow participants to learn about and connect with ponies on the ground. This might involve spending time with them, leading or grooming them, even learning how to muck out stables and clean tack.

Tea with a pony

These multi sensory sessions are aimed at those living with dementia and other life limiting conditions alongside their carers. As well as tea and cake participants get to reconnect with horses and make positive new memories in a relaxed atmosphere.
